Part 2 of the Hex battle board article. This article will show you how to make your own elevations for your battle board. Elevations add depth and strategy to your games, and also look nice so you are not alwways playing on a flat surface!  These are pretty basic techniques in terrain building and should help you out on your journey to making more advanced pieces!  If you have any questions feel free to ask in the forums.

Materials you will need

  • Pink (salmon) insulation board $10 at Home Depot, this is the pink insulation board that goes under the siding of your house.
  • Brown paint $2 at Walmart. Get the big container of it you will need it.
  • White paint $1 at Walmart. Get the little container of it.
  • Black paint $1 at Walmart. Get the little container of it.
  • White glue/ PVA glue (Elmers glue) $1
  • Flock $10 you need a big bag, or big container of it.
  • Water (Free)
  • Heroscape Tiles (if you don't have these then it is around $40 for the game)

Ok, remember that other half of salmon board (insulation board) we had from the hex battle board? Lets grab that and get ready to make some elevations!

Grab a marker and draw some basic shapes of elevations that you would like. You will want more then one level to your elevation so draw some smaller shapes that will fit inside some of your larger ones..

My son prefers to use a razor blade to cut his shapes out. Be careful when you do this so you don't stab yourself in the eyeball. If you are a younger reader you need to ask an adult to show you how to use a cutting tool of this kind. Razorblades will get dull real quick cutting through the insulation board so you will need to change blades often.

I use the blade of a hack saw to cut through the insulation board. It doesn't dull like a razor and I can cut a lot quicker with it when I am doing multiple pieces.

Here are our basic shapes that we cut out. They sure are ugly, but they will look much better once we give them some TLC. :) We mock them up as we go to see if we are satisfied with what we have so far and that all the pieces are going to fit the way we want them to.

My son decides he wants a long wall to go along the outside edge of his, so he cuts out another piece for it. (not pictured) I decied to add an arch to mine so I cut a little more out as well.
