Here is a step-by-step:
First, I gathered some wire. The larger wire is 14 gauge indoor copper building wire that was left over after a home project. The smaller wire I've had in the garage for years. I have no idea how I acquired it.
I cut the 14 guage to length and clamped the root end with a pair of vise grips. Then I twisted the wire into the shape I wanted. After I had a basic shape I added the thinner wire. I used it to build up areas and to represent the taper of natural branches.
After all the wire was in place, I started to add masking tape. I built it up in several layers and tried to get a good shape. To make it easier to wrap around the smaller branches, I cut the tape into skinnier strips.
